COL. SAMUEL GARETH LIVECCHI, 59, of OCEANPORT, died Thursday at home after a prolonged battle with cancer. He worked at Titan Systems in Shrewsbury and Tinton Falls for 10 years, where he was vice president of Fort Monmouth Operations. He grew up in Silver Creek, N.Y., and received both
Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in experimental and physiological psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he also served
as assistant professor of military science. He was awarded a commission in the Army in 1965. He had an extensive career in the Army, having served one tour in Vietnam as the senior adviser to the 4th Battalion, 15th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division (ID). He served as chief of a Command Logistics Review Team, logistics readiness officer, and chief of the Logistics Analysis Branch in the office of the 5th Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was deputy commander of Mainz Army Depot in Mainz, Germany. He served as combat service support program manager, executive officer, and commander of the Division Material Management Center, all 9th ID at Fort Lewis, Wash. He was commander of the 195th Ordnance Battalion at Fort Dix. His final post was director of maintenance at CECOM, Fort Monmouth.
During his Army service he was awarded two Bronze Stars, a Bronze Star with valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army
Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Legion of
Merit, as well as several other citations. He retired from the Army as a colonel in 1992 and settled in Oceanport. He held various positions in the National Defense
Industrial Association; the Society of Logistics Engineers (now the International Society of Logistics); and The Retired Officers Association.
He was predeceased by his father, Samuel P. Livecchi; and an infant daughter, Andrea A. Livecchi. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Rosalie A. Pellitteri Livecchi; a son, Gary M. Livecchi of Texas; two daughters, Lisa M. Ball of Bayville, Berkeley, and Crista M. Livecchi of Massachusetts; his mother, Sara R. Livecchi of New York; a brother, Ronald J. Livecchi of Georgia; a granddaughter, Alexandra G. Ball of Bayville; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 882 Broadway, West Long Branch. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday from the funeral home followed by a noon funeral Mass at St. Dorothea's Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Burial will follow with full military honors at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
