John T. O'Neill

Feb. 18, 1945 - May 14, 2003

STONY CREEK o John T. O'Neill, age 58, of Tannery Lane, passed away unexpectedly, peacefully in his sleep Wednesday afternoon, May 14, 2003. Born in Schenectady on Feb. 18, 1945, he was the son of the late John and Ethel Armstrong O'Neill. He moved to Stony Creek at the age of two where he lived until his untimely death. John served in the US Army from July 1966 to June 1968 as a radio-teletype operator in Germany. He went on to earn his AAS degree in Business Administration at Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College at SUNY Morrisville. He returned home starting a career in local government and community services. He was appointed as Stony Creek Town Justice from 1974-1975. He ran successfully for Town Supervisor in 1978 and was able to accumulate 24 years of service as town supervisor. 'I\vo of his major accomplishments during this time of office were rebuilding the Town I Tall and building the Stony Creek Post Office. His memberships include Warren Co Board of Directors; Greater Adirondack Resource Conservation and Development Council; Warren County Soil and Water Conservation Districts; New York Association of Conservation Districts; National Association of Conservation Districts; District Operations Committee and the Resource, Policy and Planning Committees; Lake George-Lake Champlain Regional Planning Board; Inter-county Legislative Committee on the Adirondacks; Warren County Cooperative Extension, Social Services, Public Health, and Legislative Committees; Warren-Hamilton County Community Action Agency; Warren County Youth Bureau; Warren County Sheriff and Communication Committee; member of the Office of Natural Disaster and Civil Defense; Masons of Greenfield Center; Luzerne VFW; Luzerne American Legion; Capital District OTB Corp; and Stony Creek Chamber of Commerce; John had a great desire to improve his local and area communities making them a better place to live and truly loved representing his fellow citizens. He also encouraged others to get involved and "make a difference' as well. Ile currently owns a laundromat in Stony Creek, along with several rental properties. John has ?0 years in the restaurant-bar industry owning and operating Stony Creek Lodge from 1983-1990. His hobbies included playing country and blue grass music with two of his bands, The Blue Water Boys and The Warren County Ramblers. He also enjoyed golfing. Besides his parents previously mentioned, John is also predeceased by a step-father, Randall Knowlton. Survivors include his wife, Elaine O'Neill of Stony Creek; a son, John Floyd Randall O'Neill of Stony Creek; two daughters, Jodi L. Stearns and partner Scott Ovitt of Diamond Point and Jean H. Steams of Stony Creek; a granddaughter, Santana Ovitt of Diamond Point; a special mother-in-law, Mary Winslow of Stony Creek; an aunt, Ruth Wallace of Schenectady; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury. Funeral services will be conducted with full military honors at the funeral home Sunday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Peter Young of Blessed Sacrament of Bolton, officiating. Burial will be at Knowlhurst Cemetery in Stony Creek immediately following. There will be a gathering, open to the public for all those wishing to celebrate and remember John's life, held at the Stony Creek Town Hall following the interment.
