Monastery of the Charred Ones and the High Lake

The Monastery is the living place of a small group of monks who have mutilated themselves in the belief that only through direct experience can the flame be truly appreciated. Many do so by putting out their eyes with glowing embers, some sear their tongues, and the holiest monks have survived full self-immolation. The only access to the Monastery is through a series of caves, the Dark Path, which lead to the High Lake. Although the path is well mapped it is nonetheless extremely dangerous, and is made more so by the monks refusal to allow pilgrims to be accompanied by guards.

Recently small groups of River People have begun pilgrimages to the High Lake to take baths in the source of the Anar. A few daring souls have even begun riding the falls in a holy journey down the length of the Anar.
